This play was absolutely fantastic! It’s short but packed full of meaning. I haven’t read Dostoevsky’s book which the play was based on but I have read enough Dostoevsky to understand and appreciate the themes going on in the play. This short play touches on the political unrest in Russia at the time as well as Atheism and Nihilism.
I really enjoyed it so much so that now I absolutely must read the work by Dostoevsky for which it was based on. Any Dostoevsky or Camus fan will surely appreciate t This play was absolutely fantastic!

Alors pourquoi Camus a t-il pris le risque de faire cette adaptation? Ils n’ont pas seulement la stature des personnages dramatiques. But the idea that they will suffer keeps them from killing themselves.
Even when one knows there is no pain, the idea remains. Just imagine a stone as big as a house falling on you. You wouldn’t have time to feel anything, to suffer at all. Well, even so, men are afraid and hesitate. There must be another reason.

NO, the other world. People think there is a reason for going on living. And there isn’t any? NO, there is none, and that’s why we are free. It is a matter of indifference whether we live or die.
How can you say that so calmly? I don’t like getting into disputes, and I never laugh. Man is afraid of death because he likes life, because life is good, that’s all. But that’s cowardice, just cowardice! And the other world does not exist! God is simply a ghost conjured up by fear of death and suffering. In camua to be free, it is essential to overcome pain and terror, it is essential to kill oneself. Then there canus no longer be any God, and camuz will at last be free.
Then history will be divided into two parts: To the divinity of man. Suddenly calm The man who dares to kill himself is God. No one had ever thought of that. There have been millions of suicides. Never for that reason. Never to kill fear. The man who kills himself to kill fear will at that very moment become God.
Be silent, heart, there is no hope! Only men who have roots in the soil can love and believe and build. The man who kills, or plans to kill, or lets others be killed, often wants to die himself. He is a comrade of Death. Perhaps that’s what Stavrogin’s laugh meant. But it is not certain that Fedka understood it thus.
No discredit to Camus, ols it was just too overwhelming a task to convert Dostoevski’s chunky novel with its vast ensemble to the stage. The scenes often feel rushed, although is done for dramatic towards the dramatic conclusion, and even with Camus’ character list truncation there wasn’t enough time to absorb everyone. I’d love to see how this could translate to performance, but despite Camus’ undeniable ability in conveying rich ideas in a minimalist, participatory fashion, i wanted more time No discredit to Camus, but it was just too overwhelming a task to convert Dostoevski’s chunky novel with its vast ensemble to the stage.

Good thing is it reminded me that I have the original on the shelf and never finished it, so may revisit it soon.

Actually did not know the play was based on a renowned novel before going into this, and now that I do I think Camus did a fine job adapting it into a theatrical read.

Sep 20, Puri Kencana Putri rated it really liked it. Took a while to finish this book, canus I’m on my hiatus from thesis. The story is pretty much similar with the previous play ‘the Just’, however, there are so many characters that I need to remember. Surely, there are plenty of significant dialogues to remember too.

Nov 24, Peter Landau rated it poswsos was amazing. Camus and Dostoevsky, lod great tastes that taste great together. Here Camus the playwright is adapting a novel by the Russian master, a book that Camus says is one of the most influential pieces of literature for him.
